Activist adventure in English

Three Czechoslovak activist games are now playable online, and one of them in English. Me and my friend, fellow 8-bit veteran Martin Kouba, converted them from the Sinclair ZX Spectrum for today’s web browsers using JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. The three games were shown at the November 1989: Road to Democracy exhibition and are now available on the associated website, 100 Student (R)evolutions. We have also managed to translate one of them, The Adventures of Indiana Jones in Wenceslas Square in Prague on January 16, 1989 to English. The wonderful pixel art was created by Jana “Yuffie” Kilianová. These games are discussed in Chapter 7 of my book and rank among the earliest activist computer games in the world.

To learn more about the process of converting them, you can read the article Indiana Jones Revisits Wenceslas Square that we wrote for the ROMChip journal.

You can also read more about these games and our conversions in this excellent article on Ars Technica by Andrada Fiscutean. The article also includes new interviews with some of the actors in the book’s story.
